Born in Arroa (Gipuzkoa) in 1963, Txiki Agirre "Keixeta" began to paint at a young age, inspired by the leading contemporary artists in the Basque Country of that time, the members of the Gaur group which included such emblematic figures as José Luis Zumeta, Rafael Ruiz Balerdi, Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida and Remigio Mendiburu. His painting during this period can be characterised as Abstract Expressionism.
It was during this period that he had his first contact with ceramic art, thanks to courses at the University of Eibar, where in addition to other disciplines he learned the skills of the potter’s wheel, drawing on this to produce work of contemporary inspiration. Later, he participated in the artists’ collective of Aia (Gipuzkoa), focusing on sculpture and ceramics, and set up his own studio-workshop in his birthplace, Arroa. There, he developed a personal style of painting, using acrylic inks and different types of paper in a process of constant experimentation with techniques such as collage.
Currently, his work in both painting and sculpture continues to be experimental and largely abstract, with occasional figurative allusions, for example to the natural environment that surrounds him including the “Flysch” cliffs of Zumaia, where he lives and works, and the ocean.
As part of his artistic training, he has taken courses in screen-printing and lithography at Arteleku with Don Herbert.
Over his long career he has won numerous prizes, starting in 1980, when he won the painting and ceramics prize of the University of Eibar. In 2004, he won the Goiart Art Competition in Ordizia (Gipuzkoa). Other distinctions include prizes in international art competitions in Aoiz (Navarre), in Zumarraga and Urretxu (Gipuzkoa), Amurrio (Álava), Abanto Zierbana (Bizkaia), as well as the XV national award of painting ADAJA in Ávila and the Artistas Noveles competition fo young artists in Gipuzkoa.
Over the years, he has participated in more than 50 individual and collective exhibitions in museums and galleries in cities including San Sebastian, Pamplona, Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Madrid, Barcelona, Santiago de Compostela, Biarritz, St Jean Pied de Port, Mauléon, Santander, Avila, Marbella, etc. He has also exhibited his work at national art fairs such as Art Madrid.
He has accomplished artistic residences in different locations such as Arteleku in San Sebastian, Balneario de Zestoa and Baigorri.
He has illustrated story books and record covers and made installations. He has participated in films such as Izenik gabe 200 x 133 (Zumeta) and Gazta zati bat (Jon Maia).
Since 2010, he has dedicated part of his time to teaching ceramics in different schools, focusing on the techniques of the wheel, raku, modeling, glazes, etc.
