IMPRISONED IMAGES – AN EXHIBITION OF WORKS BY JUAN LUIS BAROJA COLLET

JUNE 08, 2017 > JULY 23, 2017

Juan Luis Baroja Collet is a sculptor and graphic artist known in the Basque Country for his imaginative creations mixing realism with fantasy.

From June 8 to July 24, he will show a broad selection of his work in the Bishops’ Prison (41, rue de la Citadelle) in Saint Jean Pied de Port. The exhibition will be open daily except Tuesday from 11.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 2.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. until June 30 and then daily from July 1 to July 23 from 10.30 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. from July 1. Entry is free.

Working with iron, wood and other materials, Juan Luis Baroja Collet creates sculptures which seem to resemble familiar objects but which have a mysterious life and identity of their own. He was born in 1957 in the French steel town of Le Creusot, where his father worked in the steel plant. At the age of nine, he returned with his parents to his father’s home town of Eibar, in the Spanish Basque province of Gipuzkoa. As a teenager, he trained in the traditional art of damascene work, decorating blackened iron with gold and silver inlay, while taking up painting as a private pursuit.

He began painting in 1977 and had his first solo exhibition in Eibar the following year. In 1979, he studied engraving under Gabriel Ramos Uranga and Mari-Puri Herrero. Later, he worked under Ignacio Chillida, the son of the sculptor Eduardo Chillida, in San Sebastian. In 1983, he moved to nearby Deba, where he lives with his family and heads a school of graphic arts. In 1987, he gave up painting to concentrate on sculpture.
