KATALINA DE ERAUSO – AN UNCONVENTIONAL BASQUE WOMAN

OTSAILA 28, 2017

To mark International Women’s Day, Maite Ithurbide, the author of the pastorale Katalina de Erauso, will give a talk on this exceptional Basque woman, known as “the Nun Lieutenant”, who after having been interned as a child in a convent, ran away and, dressed as a man, travelled in the 1620s through Spain to South America, where she enrolled in the Spanish army and actively participated in the colonization of the Americas.

The event will take place on Friday 11 March at 6.30 p.m. in the town hall of Saint Jean Pied de Port. Entry will be free of charge.

On the same occasion, we will inaugurate the 2017 edition of our annual exhibition L'Art au Féminin with works by three local artists - Marie-Josée Arosteguy, Béatrice D. et Josette Dacosta. The exhibition will run from 8 March to 31 March in the Town Hall and at no. 22, rue de la Citadelle.

The two events are being organised with the support of the Basque Cultural Institute and the municipality of Saint Jean Pied de Port.
